For Immediate Release – September 1, 2007 San Juan Symphony to Celebrate Song & Dance in 2007-2008
Concert Season The festivities will begin on Saturday, September 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Henderson Fine Arts Center Performance Hall at San Juan College, the Symphony’s new home in Farmington, where four local and international singers will join the SJS for a return visit to the wonderful world of opera. In a feast of arias and ensembles, the guest quartet—Gemma Kavanagh, soprano; Gemma Coma-Alabert, mezzo-soprano; Israel Lozano, tenor; and Daniel Cilli, baritone— will lead a thrilling tour through tragedy, comedy and romance. The event will also be a “Side-by-Side” performance featuring local high school musicians playing in concert with their SJS counterparts. The program will be repeated on Sunday, September 30, at 3 p.m. the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. On Saturday, November 17th, at 7:30 p.m., the SJS will debut in its second new venue of the year, the Michael D. Palm Theater in Telluride, with a lush and lyrical program showcasing the glory of American Voices. Both the Durango and Telluride Choral Societies will add their splendid sounds to American favorites ranging from Copland, Reston, and Reigger to Bernstein’s Candide and West Side Story. Durango residents will have their opportunity to enjoy the show on Sunday, November 18th, again at 3 p.m. at the Community Concert Hall. A Gershwin Valentine is the romantic offering for Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Farmington and Sunday, February 17, 2008 in Durango when the SJS welcomes back internationally acclaimed guest trumpeter, Ryan Anthony, for a program of beloved Gershwin hits and love songs. With breathtaking virtuosity and touching sentiments Anthony’s program stretches from classic Broadway to The Beatles, and beyond. The season will come to a close with a tribute to dance on Saturday, April 19, 2008 in Durango and Sunday, April 20, 2008 in Farmington when Israeli Cellist Inbal Segev presents the brimming energy of Haydn’s grand C Major Concerto and the poignant Yiddish melodies of Schindler’s List, and the whole orchestra pulls out all the stops to finish the season with exhilarating Czech and Russian masterpieces. Season tickets for the rich and vibrant musical journey of four concerts start at $105 for adults, $84 for seniors and $42 for students in Durango, and $70 for adults and $30 for students in Farmington. Season tickets in Farmington include three Song & Dance Concerts and the Family Concert on February 4, 2008. Single tickets are also available for each concert.
